In 1972, the Winnipeg Jets became the city’s first professional hockey team as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA). After the WHA had ceased operations, the Jets were absorbed into the NHL. The small-market Jets struggled financially and in 1996 the team was relocated to Arizona and were renamed the Arizona Coyotes.

For 15 years Winnipeg was without a team. However, in 2011, the Atlanta Thrashers relocated to Winnipeg and were renamed the Winnipeg Jets to the delight of the hockey-loving city. Winnipeg Jets Ticket Holders purchased 13,000 season tickets in 17 minutes the day they went on sale.

The Jets failed to make the playoffs in their first 3 seasons in Winnipeg. However, in 2015, they just squeaked into post-season play and faced the top-ranked Anaheim Ducks in the opening round. Winnipeg Jets Ticket Holders proudly revived the “white-out” for this first playoff series for the Jets in almost 20 years. The white-out is a team tradition that dates back to 1987 when fans of the original Jets franchise wore white clothing to home playoff games to intimidate the visiting team.

Over the next 2 seasons, the Jets failed to qualify for the playoffs, but in 2018, they became the highest scoring team in the Western Conference and made it into the post-season. The Jets defeated the Minnesota Wild and Nashville Predators in the opening and second round of the playoffs, respectively. However, they were defeated by the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.

The Winnipeg Jets’ play home arena is the MTS Centre. With a seating capacity of about 15,000, it’s the smallest arena in the NHL, but Winnipeg Jets Ticket Holders keep it packed. Having lost their team once, Jets fans are determined to prove that they want NHL hockey in their city.
